KEF PSW3500 SubwooferIt is known that the ideal form for speaker system is sphere. It is completely devoid of standing waves and dispersion is close to perfect. The engineers of KEF took this into consideration while designing PSW3500 sub, the form of which quite meets the requirements of modern design. In the end, it is destructive when bass machine stands in the corner, so it should look like interior element. A long-stroke head with 12-inch (300 mm) diffuser is installed in the closed elliptical body. A built-in amplifier with the power of 300W puts it in motion. Connectors are presented by only linear input and output that slightly limits the scope of PSW3500. But controls are present in full: in addition to essential (phase and level) there are auto-on switch by input signal, sharp transition band switch of low-pass filter frequency response (12 and 24 db/oct.) and also select of correction (Music/Cinema). For use with external crossover (for example, built-in AV-processor) you can turn the built-in one off, after that the sub takes a flat frequency response with upper limit of 250 Hz. It is very handy to control the device by the remote control, which takes the main control functions and settings, including stand-by mode. In cases when the sub is placed out of the remote's range, you can connect an external IR sensor. We immediately appreciated all the advantages of remote control - settings can be made directly from the listening position. It is impossible to describe all the advantages of this model in brief, I will focus on the main. The most impressive thing in this device is incredibly clear and smooth playing of the lowest notes. Bass is not bloated but organized and literally touchable, its control is great. There is no hint on non-linearity or side-tones of the body; everything is clear and correct. Having a big bass depth with articulated "seismic" effect, the sub also manages to confidently cross the rest part of the spectrum. Kick is conveyed confidently, attack is not blurred at all. Dynamics corresponds to all the requirements to realistic display of the most massive effects. The reaction on switch of Music/Cinema mode is very sensitive and this is expressed in some contraction of bass register in first case and great relaxedness in the second. However, in both settings there is no loss of tempo or power of low-frequency effect. KEF PSW3500 can be easily considered as the true universal device, being able to "shake" furniture when you need and very correctly work various musical compositions out. ![]() |
