Polk Audio PSW1000 SubwooferThe model PSW1000 is made in very massive case of bass-reflex type (by the branded Power Port technology) with the system of internal struts and side panels with the thickness of 4.5 cm. Two 10-inch own-produced drivers with polymer membranes made by Dynamic Balance principle are installed on them. The total area is equivalent to 300-mm head, but at the same time the emitters of smaller caliber obviously win by pulse indicators. An amplifier of BASH type, which combines the advantages of AB class and ultra-efficient pulse cascades, was used in the Polk Audio PSW1000 sub. Its nominal power is 400 W at peak of 825, so there shouldn't be problems with dynamics. Everything is also okay with switching. The phase can only be inverted (0 and 180 degrees); automatic turn on by the input signal is provided. Cutoff frequency and volume level controls are placed on the front panel for convenience. Also it has boost button, which like loudness increases bass return on 3 db. The low-frequency power of the American subwoofer is taken for granted. Actually, I expected this from already first minutes of knowing (seeing as the potential is visible to the naked eye). Sincere zeal while playing the lowest bass awakens a storm of emotions, when you literally all over feel infrasound component. Low-frequency potential of PSW1000 is so great that sometimes there is a desire to take it in hand. The matter is that when you install the upper limit of the playing above 80 Hz, the nonlinearity in the area of middle bass becomes noticeable that leads to some loss of the clarity and informational content. Aurally it is perceived as the simplification of rhythmic pattern and smudge of the attack of bass instruments. But when you limit the operating band to ab. 70 Hz, everything falls into place - aggressiveness and intensity are gone, bass structure is cleaned. On the whole, PSW1000 has a huge sound potential, which is possible to realize at its proper installation and careful tuning. Frequency response is also should be limited. Let the sub do its part - to play the lowest notes, complementing the main sound picture. |
