Wharfedale Moviestar MS-100 HCP 5.1 systemWe see quite a budget solution, designed to create an entry-level home theater. The set consists of four satellites, a central channel and an active subwoofer. The monitors' bodies are made of non-resonant ABS plastic. The entire spectrum is reproduced by proprietary 75-mm drivers with extruded cellulose diffusers. According to Wharfedale engineers, this is an inexpensive and effective way to achieve coherent radiation in the mid- and high-frequency ranges. Support from below is provided by an active subwoofer of medium size, built on a 200-mm long-stroke driver. It works in a bass-reflex design and is swung by a built-in amplifier with a peak power of 200 watts. As the driver is located at the bottom of the body the manufacturer recommends installing the subwoofer on the supplied spikes for more effective decoupling with the floor. The sound of satellites is distinguished by an excellent elaboration of the mid-range, speaking about the spectrum above, some details are lost. In terms of tonality, the sound may acquire a certain (not too critical for general perception) coloration, expressed in emphasizing the voice sibilants. The satellites do not really like high levels of loudness, in this case the sound is somewhat coarsened, the signs of compression of the music signal are increasingly appearing in it. All in all, the sub behaves fairly correctly. The bass is fast and has a distinct structure, but sometimes powerful low-frequency notes lead to loss of tempo and accuracy. In this case, you should find a more suitable location for the subwoofer in the room. |
