Sound Dynamics R85 Bookshelf speakersThe Sound Dynamics R85 is a two-way bass reflex speaker system with a port on the rear panel. With a detailed analysis of the sound, the most favorable impression is left by the range served by the low-frequency driver. The average sensitivity spread is ±2.5 dB in the absence of large scale ups and downs. It will be interesting to recall the meaning of the bass reflex port. As you know, two ways of placing it are most common: either the "breathing" of the phase inverter is directed directly to the listener, or the port is modestly arranged on the rear panel (as in the case of the R85). Despite the fact that there is no clear choice in favor of the first or second solution yet, it seems that systems with a port on the rear panel are starting to win in this protracted dispute. We will not theoretically substantiate this opinion, we will only refer to the results of numerous auditions and testing. Sound Dynamics R85, in particular, is additional evidence in favor of the rear placement of the bass reflex port. The upper part of the range is less organized than the lower part. Although the unevenness averaged over the subrange does not differ much, the scale of local differences somewhat increases against the background of a noticeable decrease in sensitivity to the upper limit. When listening, this can give a feeling of some discomfort (we have to talk about subtle subtleties). But good smooth bass conceal this feeling. Moreover, subjectively, the majority of experts noted as a positive moment the good sounding of jazz-rock and symphonic works, which are complex in terms of dynamics and bass (the London Festival Orchestra and the Ljubljana Radio Symphony Orchestra). I liked the sound of the "classic" tracks from the ABBA Gold disc less, but Dire Straits put everything in its place. The average sensitivity of the system is low (about 84 dB). But the field uniformity is very good, the stereo effect is reliable. The characteristic of the input resistance module gives: the average value of the resistance is 11 ohms, the nominal value is 5.5 ohms with a standard deviation of about 6 ohms. The bass reflex tuning frequency is 35 Hz. |
