Arcam A18 AmplifierBy the standards of Arcam, this model belongs to the initial level, but there are no serious simplifications in the construction. To minimize the effect of vibrations on sensitive electronic components, the amplifier is assembled on a massive metal chassis. An impressive toroidal transformer with a serious current margin is at the heart of the power system. The amplifier has a relatively low power (50 watts per channel per 8 ohms), but thanks to high-current output stages it is able to control even loudspeakers with complex impedance characteristics. In Arcam A18 six pairs of line connectors are provided for connection of the sources on the rear panel, as well as an input for vinyl players with a MM type head. Another useful feature is the Processor Mode, which is designed to integrate the amplifier into a home theater system. The character of Arcam A18 completely corresponds to the original concept of the most neutral sound. There are no special claims to tonal balance or to dynamic qualities. The amplifier differs by a clearly drawn, energetic lower range. The bass is characterized by outstanding speed indicators and solid depth. Information in the mid-range is presented as plausibly as possible, with minimal coloring and almost complete absence of rigid components. The timbres of natural instruments are easy to determine by ear, and the vocal parts are full of necessary details and variety. The amplifier reproduces the upper spectrum somewhat unusually. With all the richness of the shades, it sometimes has the lack of specifics and air - the most subtle details that form the atmosphere. However, there were not any special remarks to the sound stage itself. Space is built in accordance with strict Hi-Fi canons, with sufficient width and precise positioning of instruments. |
